Exclusive Opioid Addiction Treatment

At Paracelsus Recovery, we provide individually-tailored and exclusive opioid addiction rehabilitation programmes. Our first step will be to provide a safe and medically supervised withdrawal from the opioid. While withdrawal is always challenging, we will make the process as comfortable as possible with supporting infusions (IVs) and various therapies. This withdrawal protocol will be carried out and supervised by a clinical nurse and our psychiatrist.

After the withdrawal procedure, our priority is to understand your relationship with opioids. Substance abuse dependencies are rarely an isolated issue and are often related to environmental, psychological, physical and social factors. During the treatment process, which takes place in the comfort and privacy of your chosen residence, we identify the underlying causes of the dependency through a 360° assessment. With this information, we can design and implement a comprehensive and individually tailored programme. At Paracelsus Recovery, we do everything we can to ensure we can provide the best opioid addiction rehabilitation programmes and treatment possible.

We can provide opioid addiction rehabilitation in Zurich and London.

About Opioid Addiction

Opioids are a class of drugs derived from the opium poppy plant. They are highly potent sedatives used for pain-relief or anaesthesia. They are also referred to as narcotics.

Commonly used opioids include:

  • Fentanyl
  • Heroin
  • Oxycodone (Oxycontin)
  • Hydrocodone (Vicodin)
  • Codeine
  • Morphine

Opioids work by blocking the link between pain signals and our brain. Once ingested, they trigger the release of large amounts of endorphins which block out sensations of pain, increase feelings of pleasure and create a short-lived but powerful sense of happiness and wellbeing. Because of these effects, opioids are taken more and more frequently for recreational use. However, once these effects wear off, people can find themselves wanting to experience these sensations again as soon as possible and this the first step towards a dependency.

Symptoms of opioid addiction include:

  • Spending more time alone or avoiding places or people with whom you cannot consume opioids.
  • A lack of concern for personal hygiene, responsibilities or social activities.
  • Fatigue, sadness, anxiety and mood swings.
  • Increasing the amount ingested to obtain the feeling of relief.
  • Experiencing withdrawal symptoms such as physical illness when not using the substance of choice.

Opioids can make the brain and body believe the drug is necessary for survival and when this happens, a physical dependency has arisen which needs to be carefully monitored. Trying to go ‘cold turkey’ can lead to long-term health effects and life-threatening conditions such as opioid withdrawal syndrome.

FAQs

We provide luxury opioid addiction rehab in London and Zurich.

The opioid addiction rehabilitation treatment begins with a detailed assessment procedure which includes an extensive medical check-up, psychiatric evaluation, comprehensive laboratory tests, a functional health assessment and lifestyle assessment. The aim of these assessments is to identify each underlying issue that has led to your dependency on opioids. The next step is usually a carefully planned, monitored and supervised withdrawal procedure. Once we have stabilised the physical symptoms, we provide intensive one-on-one therapy sessions, biochemical restoration and numerous complementary therapies to manage your psychological and physical dependence. A live-in addiction specialist will be available 24/7 to help process any difficult emotions that can arise during recovery. We also provide joint family psychoeducation and aftercare services.

In the short term, opioids reduce our perception of pain and cause drowsiness, confusion and euphoria. At high doses, they depress respiration and can lead to an overdose and cessation of breathing. In the long term, opioid abuse changes the neurochemistry in our brain which can lead to psychological addiction, tolerance, withdrawal symptoms, mood swings and mental health conditions such as depression and psychosis.

Symptoms of opioid abuse include dizziness, respiratory depression, nausea, vomiting, constipation, weakened immune system, infections of the heart lining and many other side effects.

Opioids can lead to a powerful physical dependency as well as a psychological addiction. When an individual takes opioids, the body slows down its natural production of endorphins. If we were already struggling with our self-esteem, our stress-levels, trauma, or numerous other difficulties, this lack of feelgood chemicals can trigger mental health conditions such as depression. In turn, mental health conditions escalate our likelihood of developing a substance abuse dependency. Opioid abuse can also lead to tolerance, which is when the original dose no longer provides the sought-after relief or pleasure. The individual then needs to take more and more of the drug to trigger the release of these much needed endorphins, and as the brain becomes more dependent on the substance and the amount needed continues to increase, the stage is set for an addiction.
