Stress Treatment

While stress can damage a person’s psychological and physical health, it is also highly reversible. At Paracelsus Recovery, we can provide bespoke treatment for mental stress and its physical consequences. Our stress treatment is focussed on restoring the mind-body equilibrium through biochemical restoration and numerous other therapies.

During biochemical restoration, we will provide all of the nutrients and chemicals that the body requires to function optimally. This enables the body to restore its inner equilibrium and balances out the excess cortisol. As appropriate, we will treat your stress-related condition using an individualised formula of nutritional supplements and IV solutions which can include vitamins, minerals, amino acids and other substances.

We also provide complementary therapies such as yoga, massage, acupuncture and reflexology, amongst many others. Intensive psychotherapy and psychoeducational sessions are included in the treatment programmes to help you develop healthier coping strategies for dealing with stress.

Physical symptoms of stress include:

Understanding Stress


Stress is a short-term solution to short-term problems. Short bursts of stress are a normal and even healthy experience as they keep us sharp, motivated and drives us through difficult events or experiences. When a person feels stressed, the brain turns on the ‘fight-or-flight’ response which increases their heart rate, heightens their senses and provides a rush of adrenaline. Our brain also releases a hormone known as cortisol which helps restore energy lost in the fight-or-flight response. Cortisol has numerous other short-term benefits such as regulating blood sugar levels and positively impacting the hippocampus, the part of our brain in which memories are stored.

When a person experiences long-term chronic stress, the body makes far more cortisol than it can release which puts the body under an enormous amount of pressure and upsets its natural equilibrium.

Excess cortisol wears down the brain’s ability to function, regulate emotions and decreases a person’s sociability. As a result, a person may begin to suffer from loneliness which can trigger a host of other mental health conditions including depression, anxiety, eating disorders and substance abuse issues.

Chronic stress also dramatically increases a person’s chances of developing heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, skin and hair problems such as acne or psoriasis and gastrointestinal problems, amongst many other conditions. All of these stress-related consequences will also make a person feel exhausted, irritable and emotionally drained, which heightens their stress levels and can lead to a vicious and damaging cycle.
