How to Find a Rehab Facility

Entering rehab for a drug or alcohol addiction is one
of the most important decisions you’ll ever make, but choosing from so
many rehabs can be overwhelming.

Before you settle on a rehab facility, consider your particular
situation and decide what is most important to you. Here are seven
things to be aware of when seeking drug and alcohol treatment or rehab.

7 Questions to Ask When Looking for a Rehab Facility

  1. Does the rehab facility offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT)? A
variety of new medications are available these days, and when used in
conjunction with counseling, they can significantly minimize cravings,
reduce the severity of withdrawal symptoms and reduce the risk of
relapse. Others can help with depression, anxiety, or other issues that
    often accompany addiction.
  2. Is medically assisted detox available? The period of detoxification
is difficult, and in cases of severe addiction, may be dangerous. Look
for a rehab facility that has an inpatient detox clinic on site, or one
that partners with a hospital. Medical staff must be present around the
clock, and medications should be available to ensure withdrawal is safe
    and as comfortable as possible.
  3. Ask if the rehab facility is equipped to offer treatment for
co-occurring disorders, as addiction frequently goes hand-in-hand with
anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder or other mental health issues.
Staff should be trained and experienced in dual diagnosis therapy
    modalities.
  4. Does the rehab facility offer alternative treatments to complement
traditional therapy? For instance, you may benefit from acupuncture,
biofeedback or massage therapy. Similarly, does the rehab offer a gym,
pool or other opportunities for fitness?
  5. Does the rehab facility offer Twelve-Step programs? Are they
required as part of treatment? While Twelve-Step programs are helpful
for many, they aren’t the answer for everybody. Similarly, some people
prefer a rehab facility that doesn’t place primary importance on group
therapy of any type. This is often essential for high-profile people who
    prefer one-on-one treatment.
  6. Is treatment private and confidential? Many luxury treatment
centers and rehabs that cater to wealthy or high-profile clients promise
confidentiality, but the reality often falls short of the lofty
promises. As a result, information is leaked to the media and privacy is
    ultimately sacrificed.
  7. Does the rehab facility offer workaround treatments for busy
executives? Some treatment centers require that your phone and computer
be set aside, while others will accommodate your need to stay “in the
loop” with matters back at the office.

How to Find the Best Rehab Facilities

The first step in finding a rehab facility is to pick up the phone. Call each treatment center that sounds promising and ask questions until you are satisfied that the rehab is (or isn’t) what you’re seeking. Quality rehab facilities will take the time to answer all of your questions. If you aren’t sure about the answers, don’t hesitate to call them back.

Don’t assume that the best treatment center is in your city. Often, treatment at a rehab facility in a different location is the best thing you can do for yourself, even if it means traveling to a different country halfway around the world. Distance can offer a new perspective and a period of removal from stresses and triggers.

Take Time, but not too Much

If you’re struggling with drug or alcohol addiction, enter treatment as soon as possible because waiting only allows symptoms to get worse. At the same time, beware of rush decisions; it’s critical to find the best rehab facility for your particular needs.

Do your homework and ask plenty of questions. Then, you’ll be armed with information to make the best choice to ensure your money is well-spent and your treatment experience is positive and long-lasting.
