Types of therapy

At Paracelsus Recovery, we include mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) into our treatment programmes where appropriate. MBCT is an excellent tool for recovery because it increases self-awareness, improves our brain’s ability to regulate emotions and decreases stress levels.

Mindfulness therapy

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps people become more aware of their thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations. With this increased awareness, we can change how we process and relate to those emotions. Mindfulness is highly effective because it focuses all of our attention on the present moment. During mindfulness therapy, we try to ‘tune-in’ to our body and our environment whilst at the same time, we take a step back from our thoughts, emotions and mental traffic.

Negative emotions can lead us down rabbit holes of rumination. If we feel stressed, we can find ourselves reflecting on all the past mistakes we’ve made, or we can start preparing for all worst-case future scenarios. To be stuck in this loop of repetitive negative thoughts is exhausting and affects our capacity for reason. When we practice mindfulness, we create space between ourselves and these emotions. Instead of being swept away by our feelings, we can watch them without judgment. Therefore, mindfulness can decrease stress levels, improve our brain’s ability to self-regulate, improve sleep and help with cravings.

FAQs

Studies show that practicing mindfulness helps reduce rumination, anxiety and stress. It can also improve our physical health by lowering blood pressure and reducing chronic pain.

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is an effective and holistic treatment for ADHD. In particular, mindfulness treatment can improve the mind’s attention span and decreases emotional impulsivity.

Mindfulness treatment for OCD places the emphasis on accepting our thoughts and increasing our emotional awareness which has a positive effect on OCD symptoms because it can ease the anxiety that comes with intrusive thoughts.

One study from the University of Oxford found that mindfulness-based cognitive therapy can be just as effective as antidepressants in preventing relapse. Mindfulness therapy helps individuals suffering from major depressive disorder (MDD) become more aware of their thoughts, feelings and bodily sensations. With this increased awareness, the individual can then create new coping mechanisms for dealing with these thoughts.

Try to practice mindfulness for a few minutes every day for six months. Ideally, try to focus less on strict daily meditation and more on trying to integrate mindfulness into your perspective on life. In other words, aim to become aware of where your attention is focused, what thoughts you are having and what emotions guide you in your day-to-day activities.
