Yoga therapy

'Yoga' refers to a whole sector of breathing techniques, strengthening exercises, postures, and meditation that can be traced back to ancient India. Yoga therapy aims to restore our inner equilibrium between mind, body and spirit. Research shows that practising yoga can improve our attention, ease stress, reduce muscle tension and limit inflammation amongst numerous other health benefits.

When used in conjunction with complementary therapies such as mindfulness, yoga therapy can also increase our emotional awareness. For example, yogic deep-breathing requires inward-thinking which in turn promotes self-confidence and an improved ability to resist the urge to abuse the body with drugs and alcohol. As practitioners become more centred, negative emotions such as shame, guilt, anger and hostility are released. People who practice yoga often become more compassionate toward themselves and in turn, towards other people.

Although it requires dedication and practice, yoga improves overall physical and mental health, helping to counteract the harmful physical and emotional consequences of long-term drug and alcohol use. It can restore balance, a sense of inner peace and overall wellbeing that may have been lacking for many years.

FAQs

At Paracelsus Recovery, we tailor-make each treatment programme to fit your specific needs so how often you would do yoga would depend on your symptoms, condition and lifestyle. However, in general we recommend trying to practice a minimum of 2-3 times a week.

Studies show that yoga therapy can ease symptoms of depression. In particular, the deep breathing exercises, postures and mind-body emphasis can help relieve symptoms of depression such as pain, low energy, sleep issues and stress.

Yoga is an excellent complementary therapy for anxiety treatment as it can ease the physical discomfort that is caused by anxiety. Studies show that because yoga encourages relaxation, it can also decrease the intensity of the stress responses. In other words, it can reduce the fear and stress caused by excessive rumination and worrying.

Yoga is not in itself a religion, but this ancient practice can have a spiritual influence on a person. Yoga places great importance on the impact of regular meditation because it can help increase positive thoughts, decrease negativity and strengthen our mind-body-spirit relationship.

People often use substances to cope with acute trauma, depression, anxiety or the stresses of everyday life. When combined with therapy and other forms of treatment, yoga can help individuals break addiction patterns and provides both immediate and long-term benefits.
