Long-Covid Treatment Programme

Up to one-third of Covid-19 survivors report symptoms of long-covid. These symptoms can be debilitating, ranging from fatigue, shortness of breath, and heart palpitations to anxiety, depression, and memory issues. Not only that, but people suffering from long Covid – or long hauliers as they've come to be known – face confusion as experts struggle to find the cure. While we may not yet know how to cure long-covid, we do know that it impacts every corner of your being; from your mental health to your cellular strength.

At Paracelsus Recovery, we have long-standing expertise in helping clients remove from exactly these kinds of all-encompassing conditions. In the last ten years, we have helped many clients restore their wellbeing after long-term health issues rooted in infectious diseases (Lyme disease, Meningo-encephalitis caused by ticks, the aftermath of influenza "flu", the Epstein-Barr-Virus etc.). We have seen how these mind-body issues lead to chronic pain, fatigue, shortness of breath, and sleep problems. These are difficult affiliations to live with and they have a dramatic impact on your ability to work and enjoy life. Sadly, chronic pain like this often ends in depression or self-medication via alcohol and drugs.

Thus, we created our 360-degree treatment method to tackle these exact issues. Specifically, we will tailor-make your long-covid care plan to make sure it addresses all of your unique ailments in a full 360 degree analysis of your health and wellbeing.

To do this, we conduct an extensive medical check-up, psychiatric evaluation, comprehensive laboratory tests, a functional health assessment, nutrition, and lifestyle assessment. With this information, we can work together (i.e., with the client) to create a comprehensive and individually tailored care plan that will restore your health on a physical, psychological, and cellular level.

The residential long-covid treatment programme takes four weeks, and our team will work with you for 8 – 12 hours a day. We can also provide aftercare services if deemed necessary.

  1. Nutritional supplements and meals to replenish any lab-identified depletion of immune-supporting and anti-inflammatory functions.
  2. Intestinal detox and pre/probiotics to restore the intestinal immune system.
  3. IHHT (Intermittent Hyperoxia-Hypoxia-Training) to boost mitochondrial function.
  4. Restoring healing massages and other body therapies (e.g. acupuncture) to help restore your energy flow.
  5. The schedule also contains regular sleep and rest times, which allows your body to reactivate its own healing system.

  1. During your treatment, a specialised psychotherapist will help you process any mental health issues related to both the covid-19 infection and the emotional stress that comes with a severe infection (self-isolating alone, being put on a ventilator, fearing that the fatigue will never go away, the difficult memory of just how much pain the breathlessness caused, etc.)
  2. A live-in therapist will be available to provide you with 24/7 emotional support.
  3. Yoga, mindfulness, breathwork, and wellbeing counselling will also be crucial aspects of your treatment plan.
  4. You will also work intimately with our in-house psychiatrist, who will help you manage a pre-existing diagnosis or find strategies for coping with a covid-19 induced issue (i.e., generalised anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder or any signs of post-traumatic stress disorder).
  5. If deemed necessary, our psychiatrist can also prescribe medication to help ease any symptoms.
  6. However, as we adopt a holistic approach to health, we will try numerous other methods and health restoration practices before turning to medication.

  1. We treat clients using an individualised formula of nutritional supplements and IV solutions based on comprehensive laboratory testing where we literally aim to 'restore' what is missing. Supplements and IVs may include vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and other substances.
  2. We use functional medicine to help restore your health and facilitate your body's natural healing process.
  3. Bio-resonance treatment is also provided. During bio-resonance, our trained physician places two electrodes on your skin which are connected to a specialised machine. These electrodes will scan the body's energy wavelengths, identify any imbalances or issues, and restore your electromagnetic frequency to its optimal state.

What is Long-Covid?

Long covid occurs when people continue to experience symptoms of COVID-19 and do not fully recover for several weeks or months after the start of their symptoms.

Common symptoms include:

  • Chronic and severe fatigue.
  • Shortness of breath, heart palpitations, chest pain or tightness
  • Memory and concentration problems ("brain fog")
  • Loss of smell and taste (or unusual changes to them)
  • Muscle aches
  • Symptoms of depression and anxiety.
  • Researchers have identified hundreds of other symptoms. These include hallucinations, insomnia, hearing and vision changes and speech issues. Some other studies found signs of gastro-intestinal and bladder problems and skin issues. The severity of symptoms varies, but many have been left unable to perform basic daily activities such as showering, buying groceries and even remembering words.

What Causes Long Covid?

We are still unsure. We know that the virus can damage cells which helps explain symptoms like brain fog and a loss of smell and taste. Damage to blood vessels can also lead to heart, lung and brain problems. Some argue that a covid-19 infection puts our immune system into overdrive, which attacks both the virus and our cells. Another theory is that small virus fragments remain dormant in the body, which is then reactivated. This does happen in other viruses, such as the Epstein Barr virus, which causes glandular fever. But the research remains inconclusive.

Then, there is the fact that not only does the Covid-19 virus exacerbate existing mental health issues, but the panic and fear surrounding the virus are equally stressful.

As a result, many people experienced dangerously high stress levels when they discovered they were infected, which would have been hard to manage when their body was already focused on beating the covid-19 infection. This 'overload' of stress combined with the very real fact that the covid-19 virus impacts our brain functioning leaves us vulnerable to a host of conditions, such as long-covid.

While we may not yet know the cause of long covid, we do know that focusing on restoring your health via holistic treatment methods can improve your immune functioning and overall well-being. As a result, your body is much more able to fight these challenging symptoms.

FAQs

Yes, we can offer an aftercare program that includes further medical and psychological consulting, at-home diagnostics, and the option to connect with your already existing therapists if you wish.

Some experts argue that those with mild cases of covid-19 should recover within 1 – 2 weeks of contracting the initial SARS-CoV-2 infection. In severe cases, recovery can take over six weeks. But it may become long-covid if acute covid-19 symptoms extend beyond 3 -12 weeks since onset. Other researchers define long covid as covid-19 symptoms that last for longer than two months.

Life-threatening complications include pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), multi-organ failure, septic shock, and death. Less severe (but equally important to address) complications include Post-Traumatic-Stress-Disorder (PTSD), chronic fatigue, breathing issues, weakened overall immune functioning, weakened lungs, anxiety disorders and heightened stress levels.

Our long-covid treatment programme mirrors our addiction and mental health programmes. Upon arrival, we will conduct an elaborate number of assessments to determine any possible issues, ranging from your mental health to your physical strength, immune functioning, cellular health (i.e., mitochondrial functioning) and many more. We then work together to create an intensive and comprehensive treatment programme that will help you address all areas of ill-health. We only ever have one client at a time, and our team will work around the clock to make sure you leave Paracelsus Recovery feeling stronger, healthier, and more at peace with yourself.

People with long covid may experience fatigue, shortness of breath, muscle aches, headaches, heart palpitations, prolonged loss of smell, depression, memory problems, chest pain and brain fog.
