Los hombres y las mujeres experimentan la depresión de forma diferente, pero es importante entender los signos sutiles de la depresión en los hombres. Aunque las mujeres son más propensas a intentar suicidarse, los hombres tienen cuatro veces más probabilidades de lograrlo.

Mujeres, hombres y depresión: las diferencias

La depresión en los hombres puede tener un componente genético, o puede ser el resultado del estrés o de la pérdida de un ser querido. En la mayoría de los casos, la depresión en los hombres se debe a una combinación de factores.

Cuando las mujeres están deprimidas, tienden a centrarse en esos sentimientos de depresión, incluyendo la culpa, la tristeza y los sentimientos de inutilidad.

Los hombres tienden a distraerse o a negar su depresión, a menudo recurriendo a otras salidas como el trabajo, los deportes, la televisión o las conductas de riesgo.

Los hombres interiorizan su depresión más que las mujeres. Como resultado, a menudo se manifiesta en forma de ira, irritabilidad o arremetiendo contra los demás

Tipos de depresión

Según el Instituto Nacional de Salud (NIH), existen tres tipos principales de depresión:

Depresión mayor es tan grave que interfiere con el sueño, la alimentación, el trabajo y el disfrute de la vida cotidiana. Puede ocurrir una vez en la vida, o un individuo puede experimentar varios episodios.

Trastorno distímico es menos grave que la depresión mayor pero puede durar dos años o más.

Depresión menor es similar a la depresión distímica, pero los síntomas son menos graves y no duran tanto.

Síntomas de la depresión en los hombres

Si le preocupa que un hombre de su vida pueda estar deprimido, busque los siguientes signos y síntomas:
