Signs of cannabis dependency

Cannabis addiction is similar to alcohol addiction insofar as while some people can smoke cannabis in moderation and never encounter an issue, this is not the case for everyone.

For some people, cannabis use poses numerous psychological health risks. In particular, underlying mental health conditions increase a person’s likelihood of developing a cannabis dependency. This is largely because cannabis changes the psychological effects of certain mental health conditions. For example, if you suffer from anxiety and smoke cannabis, after a few hits you may start to feel less anxious. When this happens, the brain can begin to associate anxiety-less states with cannabis, forming a dependency that sows the seeds for tolerance to set in. Not only will the person need to smoke more to feel less anxious, but every single time they try to eliminate that underlying anxiety will come back more severely.

Similar to many other addictions, the most notable sign of substance abuse dependency is smoking cannabis despite the negative consequences on family life, daily activities, and career, or being unable to stop using the substance despite wanting to quit. Other signs include

• Depending on cannabis to sleep, be creative, social, or relaxed.
• Increasing tolerance and withdrawal symptoms (insomnia, paranoia, increased appetite).
• Choosing relationships, events, and activities based on whether or not you can smoke.
• Continuing to smoke despite the problems it is causing in your life, relationships, or job.
• Using cannabis to cope with sadness, boredom, anxiety, or mental health challenges.

FAQs

Although cannabis does not carry the same risk of physical dependence that one finds with other substances, it can be psychologically addictive given the right environmental, biological, and genetic factors. Some studies show that 30% of those who use cannabis may have some degree of dependency.

Several studies show that cannabis use increases an individual’s likelihood of developing psychiatric conditions such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse dependency, and psychosis. However, genetic susceptibility, the amount consumed, its potency, and the age at first use all have a substantial influence on this relationship.

Our cannabis addiction rehabilitation programs adopt a holistic treatment approach that emphasizes healing the whole person – body, mind, and soul. Each treatment program is created for the individual and in general, each program will include psychiatry, biochemical restoration, intensive therapy, a live-in therapist, complementary therapies, and 5‑star hospitality service.

We provide exclusive cannabis addiction rehab in London and Zurich.

Cannabis use leads to changes in cognitive function that can affect learning, memory, and mood for days or weeks. Long-term use can lead to more permanent impairments which may increase anxiety levels, paranoia and impact one’s relationship with their loved ones, career, and themselves.
