Treatment for binge eating disorder

Binge eating disorder (BED) occurs when a person suffers from the compulsion to consume large amounts of food in short intervals. BED is a mental health condition where the person who is suffering has little or no control over their eating habits and often can’t remember what they have actually eaten. BED and compulsive overeating disorder are two of the most common yet most stigmatised mental health issues, often resulting in obesity and numerous health issues such as high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke and heart disease.

If you are struggling with a binge eating disorder, we can help. At Paracelsus Recovery, our treatment programmes are uniquely designed to help you address each underlying factor contributing to the disease. Amongst others, these will include neurobiological, psychological and biochemical components.

Upon arrival, we carry out an in-depth assessment to identify each physical or mental health condition and address these with a range of treatments including an intense programme of psychiatry, psychotherapy, biochemical restoration, nutritional and lifestyle counselling and complementary therapies.

We treat binge eating disorders in our treatment centres in Zurich and in London.

Signs and symptoms of binge eating disorder

  • Restrictive and rigid control over one’s food during the day or eating relatively normally and then consuming vast amounts of food in the evening.
  • Stockpiling food, often in secret, to consume at a later time.
  • Experiencing overwhelming feelings of stress or anxiety that can only be relieved by eating.
  • Feelings of numbness or ‘blacking out’ while bingeing.
  • Constantly feeling hungry or empty and never feeling full.
  • A decrease in the period of time between binges.

Binge eating disorder

Binge eating is often used as a coping mechanism for painful thoughts, challenging emotions and dealing with trauma and stress, as it can provide a momentary distraction from these experiences.

The food consumed whilst binge eating is usually ‘comfort food’ such as sugars and carbohydrates which can be addictive because of the endorphins that are released in the brain after eating these types of foods. Binge eating disorder is therefore a mental health condition that can also create an addictive pattern of behaviour. Binge eating disorder often co-occurs with mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, impulse control issues and substance abuse. It can also lead to the development of other eating disorders such as bulimia nervosa.

A person suffering from binge eating disorder often feels emotions such as guilt, disgust and shame for their eating habits whilst still being constantly overwhelmed by thoughts of food. These emotions are painful and can damage a person’s emotional wellbeing and physical health.

FAQs

Binge eating disorder (BED) refers to a clinical disorder in which people eat large amounts of food in short intervals, followed by intense feelings of guilt, shame and self-loathing. Someone diagnosed with BED will binge-eat at least once a week for three months.

Genetic, biological, psychological and environmental factors all contribute to the development of binge eating disorder. Binge eating disorder can also be a symptom of other mental health conditions such as depression. Loneliness, low self-esteem and body dysmorphia are also common root causes of BED.

Symptoms of BED include uncontrollable eating despite not feeling hungry, eating quicker than is considered normal and feelings of guilt or self-loathing after a period of binging. Other common signs of BED are mood swings, depression and eating in secret or alone due to feelings of shame or embarrassment about one’s eating habits.

At Paracelsus Recovery, treatment for binge eating disorder is centred on intensive psychotherapy to address the root causes and underlying emotional issues that trigger the binge eating cycle. We provide biochemical restoration, yoga, massage and complementary therapies as well as focusing on lifestyle and nutritional counselling to create long-lasting changes to your eating habits.

When a person binge eats, they often consume vast quantities of unhealthy food such as sugary, fatty snacks and carbohydrates, which lack the essential nutrients the body requires to function. During biochemical restoration, we provide the amino acids, vitamins and nutrients required to restore the body to optimal health resulting in fewer cravings, less fatigue and an improvement in your overall wellbeing.
