Fame and fortune are a gilded cage. For example, our research team found that 41% of Oscar winners since 1992 have suffered from a mental health issue. As a result, they are almost seven times more likely to suffer from emotional issues than the public. As the brilliant Dr Paul Hokemeyer explains, this is partly because “the level of success [and pressure] that Oscar-winning celebrities attain is beyond comprehension for about 99.9 per cent of the population.”
Depression, anxiety, substance abuse and narcissistic personality disorder are the most pervasive problems.
