WHAT WE TREAT

Rehab for Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD)

We understand that suffering from TRD is as exhausting as it is frightening. While we understand why you might be sceptical about how our treatments could help treatment-resistant depression, hear us out. Our treatment programmes emphasise psychedelic psychotherapy and cutting-edge treatments that have been shown to effectively reduce the severity of your symptoms. But more importantly, we can help you re-find your sense of meaning and energy for life.

Depression is one of the most challenging conditions to live with, especially when you feel you have tried everything and nothing works. While treatment-resistant depression is among the most complicated conditions to treat, recovery is possible with a holistic treatment approach. The root-causes are almost always multifaceted, ranging from ‘upper-level’ causes like your lifestyle, sleep schedule and diet, to more deeply ingrained patterns of thought and behaviour, often a result of childhood experiences, and internal belief patterns.

A person is diagnosed with treatment-resistant depression (TRD) when they have a diagnosed depressive disorder that has not successfully responded to at least two antidepressant trials of adequate dose and duration. Usually, people with depression can recover once they receive adequate medication and treatment. However, in the case of TRD, medicine offers no relief. TRD is a relatively common condition, with up to 30% of people suffering from clinical depression struggling with TRD.

There is no single cause of TRD. In our experience at Paracelsus Recovery, depression becomes treatment-resistant when there are issues (often trauma) blocking the potency of the anti-depressant. Common root causes include medical conditions such as heart disease, cancer or thyroid problems, drug interactions, co-occuring conditions such as substance abuse and anorexia nervosa, intestinal perfusion, genetic dispositions, and misdiagnoses. The good news is that TRD is, in fact, treatable. At Paracelsus Recovery, we believe that all TRD means is that antidepressants didn’t work for you and a different treatment approach is needed.

Through our combination of medical, psychological and personal care, we are proud to be the only clinic in the world that addresses co-occurring conditions and every possible root-cause of treatment-resistant depression. In so doing, we can help you recover in a matter of weeks, rather than years or months.

How we treat TRD

We understand that treatment-resistant depression requires a highly individualised approach, which is why we don’t follow a pre-defined treatment path. At Paracelsus Recovery, every client receives a bespoke treatment plan, crafted specifically for their needs. Your four-week stay will be thoughtfully structured to include a range of tailored therapies, such as rTMS (repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation), psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy, and many other psychotherapeutic and medical treatments.

These therapies are designed to work together, addressing every aspect of your physical, emotional, and psychological well-being. See below for more details.
