Affluent Neglect

Society expresses great concern for poor, underserved children and the increased likelihood they may lack access to health care and education, or that they may turn to drugs or crime in adulthood. Less attention is paid to children of affluent parents who have their own set of problems. Emotional neglect often goes unnoticed or unreported, which may…

Overdose risk calculator

One Client at a Time

Unparalleled staff to patient ratio of 15:1

At Paracelsus Recovery, working primarily with ultra-high-net-worth clients, we have seen how growing up in an affluent household can affect an individual’s mental health. Our research has shown that the wealthy are no less vulnerable to substance abuse or mental illness than anyone else. On the contrary, wealth can increase an individual’s likelihood of encountering these challenges. Children growing up in affluent homes often have to navigate high expectations, emotional neglect, and a lack of boundaries, amongst other environmental factors.

All of these variables can heighten that child’s chances of using substance abuse as a coping mechanism. To create greater awareness of the correlation between familial wealth and mental ill-health, Paracelsus Recovery has designed an algorithm that provides a statistical analysis of your child’s risk of an overdose.

In what generation of family wealth is your kid? (self made = 1st generation) 2
What amount of money can your kid spend per month? [USD] Less than 1000
How many times per week do you see your kid? (think of a normal week) 1
What’s the net worth of your family? [Millions USD] 2 to 10

This Overdose Risk Calculator has been constructed by the research team of Paracelsus Recovery. It applies an algorithm that combines publicly accessible data, privately conducted surveys amongst ultra-high-net-worth families and private clinics, and information obtained from Paracelsus Recovery’s experience of treating families battling substance abuse issues. The input data applies to children in the 12-16 age bracket, and the results depict the statistical likelihood of that child experiencing an overdose from a substance (illicit drugs, alcohol, prescription medication) over the course of their lifetime, leading to either death or hospitalization.

DISCLAIMER: This Overdose Risk Calculator has been constructed by the research team of Paracelsus Recovery. It applies an algorithm that combines publicly available data, privately conducted surveys amongst ultra-high-net-worth families and private clinics, and knowledge obtained from Paracelsus Recovery's extensive expertise in treating wealthy individuals and their families in the grips of addiction. It is a mere statistical tool designed to generate awareness, and has no predictive power.

This research paper explains the rationale and functionality of this calculator.
